Replacement of Drive Shaft Rummber boot

Is there a secret on how to replace the rubber boot on the drive shaft for a 170S? The book says you must remove the rear axle to accomplish this task. Has anyone found a way to do this without rear axle removal/ I guess you could remove the engine and transmission to accomplish the task. Are there any other options? jim
